Overview

Valmont is a Fortune 1000 company that impacts millions globally by advancing agricultural productivity and reimagining vital infrastructure. The Sub Arc Base Welder II is responsible for operating a flux-core sub-arc welder to prepare welds on steel multi-sided shafts, working both independently and in teams.

Responsibilities

  • Load and unload pole sections onto the base weld station with an overhead crane.
  • Preheat baseplate as required.
  • Apply a backing weld using the GMAW process.
  • Prep groove using carbon arc gouging and/or grinding.
  • Operate sub-arc welder and observe the weld as the weld metal is deposited.
  • Adjust amperage and wire speed according to WPS to meet quality specifications.
  • Self inspect welds to ensure quality of workmanship and rework if required.
  • Perform excavation of welds using carbon arc gouging and repair using GMAW for welds that failed Ultrasonic Testing.
  • May be assigned to work in other work centers when the machine is not in operation.
  • Actively participate in department safety and demonstrate excellent safety practices.
  • Participate in department LEAN activities and demonstrate performance in a team environment.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of Valmont’s quality procedures, standards, and practices.

Requirements

  • A minimum of 0-1 year of welding experience.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Ability to read blueprints and use a tape measure.
  • Ability to pass an AWS welder operator qualification test for SAW and GMAW.
  • Ability to operate overhead cranes.
  • Ability to setup, operate, and perform general maintenance of equipment.
  • Ability to make mathematical calculations for preparing product or setting up machinery.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and flat sheets without assistance.
  • Ability to interpret Weld Procedures and Work Instructions.
  • Must be able to safely lift up to 50 pounds maximum, with frequent lifts up to 20 pounds.
  • Ability to be trained on and pass tests for operating an overhead crane and forklift.
  • Must possess an acceptable work history and attendance record.
  • Thorough knowledge of welding procedures and practices is essential.
