Job Description

Overview

The Shop Structural Ironworker will raise, place, and unite iron or steel girders, columns, and other structural members to form completed structures or structural frameworks. This role may also involve erecting metal storage tanks and assembling prefabricated metal buildings in a fabrication shop.

Responsibilities

  • Read specifications or blueprints to determine the locations, quantities, or sizes of materials.
  • Connect columns, beams, and girders with bolts, following blueprints and instructions from supervisors.
  • Bolt aligned structural steel members in position for permanent riveting, bolting, or welding into place.
  • Fasten structural steel members to hoist cables, using chains, cables, or rope.
  • Hoist steel beams, girders, or columns into place, using cranes or signaling hoisting equipment operators to lift and position structural steel members.
  • Verify vertical and horizontal alignment using plumb bob and level.
  • Weld components in flat, vertical, or overhead positions.
  • Recognize, set up, and operate hand and power tools common to the welding trade.
  • Perform daily maintenance and safety checks.
  • Ensure compliance with all safety procedures and policies while promoting the company’s safety culture.
  • Perform other duties as requested, directed, or assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • At least 3 years’ experience as a structural ironworker.
  • Ability to pass a written test and/or a welding test.
  • Working knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in construction.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and drawings.
  • Knowledge of arithmetic.
  • Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent time-management skills to plan, organize, and prioritize tasks.
  • Ability to work cooperatively across all levels delivering on commitments.
  • Ability to complete work with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work under pressure to meet department targets and deadlines.
  • Ability and willingness to travel as required.

Additional Information

  • Ability to work outdoors, exposed to heat and humidity, cold and rain, and around heavy traffic areas.
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time which may consist of 8 or more hours.
  • Ability to climb ladders, stairs, and scaffolds.
  • Ability to work at various heights wearing fall protection.
  • Ability to frequently walk on uneven surfaces, including natural ground in varying weather conditions.
  • Work that includes moving and/or lifting objects up to 50 pounds, carry at least 30 pounds and up to 150 pounds with help.
