Overview

Signal Metal Industries is a well-established steel fabrication and machining company with over 50 years of experience in manufacturing large steel products. They are seeking experienced Heavy Plate Fitters/Fabricators to lay out, fit, and assemble large welded steel components in a heavy fabrication environment.

Responsibilities

  • Position, align, fit, and assemble heavy steel plate components and large weldments using blueprints, shop drawings, and layout specifications.
  • Read engineering drawings, bills of material, and work orders to determine fit-up sequence and requirements.
  • Lay out, measure, and mark materials, accounting for thickness, shrinkage, and fabrication tolerances.
  • Move and position large components using overhead cranes, hoists, and shop equipment.
  • Fit parts using clamps, jacks, wedges, pins, and other fabrication tools.
  • Verify fit-up and dimensions using tape measures, squares, levels, and layout tools.
  • Tack weld assemblies to secure parts prior to final welding.
  • Perform FCAW welding during fit-up and fabrication as needed.
  • Straighten and adjust heavy components using torches, presses, and fabrication methods.
  • Build simple fixtures or aids to support accurate fit-up when required.
  • Work with supervisors and team members to maintain production flow and quality.
  • Maintain a safe and organized fabrication environment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • 3+ years heavy plate fitting or heavy fabrication experience.
  • Strong blueprint reading and layout skills.
  • Experience fitting large weldments or heavy steel plate assemblies.
  • FCAW (Flux Core Arc Welding) experience required.
  • Experience working with thick steel plate and heavy industrial components.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to lift 50+ lbs in a fabrication shop environment.
  • Heavy industrial fabrication experience (mining, steel mill, material handling, heavy equipment).
  • Multi-pass FCAW welding experience.
  • Overhead crane and forklift experience.
  • Experience with tight-tolerance fit-up on large weldments.

Additional Information

  • This position is a Full-time Direct Hire located in Irving, Texas.
  • Day shift - (Monday - Thursday 4 x 10s), Overtime on Friday as required.
  • Hourly pay rate $24.00 - $28.00 depending on experience.
  • All candidates must successfully complete a hands-on fitting and welding assessment at our Irving, TX facility.
