Overview
The Melt Operator (VAR) is responsible for efficiently operating and maintaining VAR Furnace(s) and associated equipment to meet productivity and quality targets. The role requires interpreting equipment needs and performing skilled maintenance and troubleshooting functions.
Responsibilities
- Operate and maintain VAR Furnace(s) and associated pre-melt and post melt equipment.
- Interpret and respond to the needs of the equipment.
- Perform skilled maintenance, set-up, and troubleshooting functions.
- Follow standard manufacturing and operating procedures.
- Perform pre-operative checks prior to and during pump down cycle.
- Set up and operate the equipment furnace(s) for melting.
- Inspect and prepare electrodes for melting.
- Weld stubs onto electrodes.
- Clean, paint, and maintain crucibles and base plates.
- Load electrodes into the furnace.
- Operate the stub welder and vacuum systems.
- Operate furnace controls and instrumentation.
- Melt ingots and perform cooling, unloading, identifying, and weighing of ingots.
- Drill and chamfer ingots for sampling.
- Band saw cut stubs and electrodes.
- Interpret video monitors, gauges, meters, etc. while operating the furnace and stub welder.
- Maintain operating records and logs.
- Maintain material and maintenance needed lists.
- Perform leak-up rate tests to determine vacuum integrity.
- Clean out furnaces and crucibles during maintenance cycles and replace damaged components.
- Operate leak detectors.
Requirements
- High school diploma/GED or equivalent is required; trade school or additional training preferred.
- 3 years working experience in a relevant environment preferred.
- Forklift and crane-operating experience highly preferred.
- Must be able to wear a respirator.
- Mig, Tig, or Stick Welding experience preferred.

- 2nd shift from 4pm to 12am.
