Overview

SpaceX is seeking a Materials Engineer specializing in welding for Starship components, responsible for leading a team to support advanced welding processes for critical mechanisms. The role involves developing, qualifying, and optimizing welding designs while ensuring reliability in extreme environments.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, optimize, and qualify weld processes for multiple welding methods.
  • Support production operations on full scale welded assemblies.
  • Provide direction to production technicians and welders on correct techniques.
  • Conduct root cause analysis in collaboration with design and manufacturing teams.
  • Set up welding qualification test campaigns and interpret results.
  • Work with NDE personnel to assess weld quality on development and flight hardware.
  • Implement improved process control using test and NDE results.
  • Establish automated welding solutions for process consistency.
  • Research new welding technologies to enhance rate, quality, and efficiency.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline.
  • Hands-on fabrication, manufacturing, or testing experience with welded assemblies.
  • Advanced degree in welding engineering, material science, mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or physics (preferred).
  • Expertise in welding processes such as laser, electron beam, and gas tungsten arc welding.
  • CNC and/or Robot programming experience for automated welding solutions.
  • Tooling design experience for welded assemblies.
  • Understanding of weld strength testing methodologies and standards.
  • Experience with root cause analysis and corrective actions.
  • Self-motivated with keen attention to detail.
  • Hands-on experience in a high-production manufacturing environment.
