Job Description

Overview

The Track Welder position involves performing maintenance activities within the railroad right-of-way under the direction of the Maintenance of Way Supervisor, ensuring safe and efficient train movement along the San Diego and Escondido Subdivisions. This role is represented by the Southwest Mountain States Regional Council of Carpenters Union and is designated as Safety-Sensitive.

Responsibilities

  • Perform railroad track maintenance, repair, and installation.
  • Repair and rebuild railroad track using hand tools and specialized equipment.
  • Perform maintenance welding of frogs, switch points, and other special trackwork.
  • Inspect all welding equipment daily for leaks.
  • Clean welding work pieces to remove impurities.
  • Monitor and maintain flow of gases for welding.
  • Inspect welding after grinding for defects.
  • Safely operate various types of equipment such as loaders and backhoes.
  • Perform maintenance and repair on related equipment.
  • Follow safety and housekeeping procedures.
  • Communicate with direct supervisor on daily production and safety issues.
  • Identify and report material and equipment usage and problems.
  • Maintain track beds and drainage facilities.
  • Observe the condition of railroad tracks and right-of-way.
  • Complete written forms and reports as required.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • One year of Railroad Maintenance of Way work experience preferred.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience reading and understanding operating and safety rules.
  • Possess and maintain a California driver’s license class A or B CDL.
  • Be a Certified Welder with experience in SMAW and/or FCAW preferred.
  • Must be able to become GCOR Qualified on NCTD owned railroad properties.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain annual access to Marine Corp Base Camp Pendleton.

Additional Information

  • This position may require shift changes and overtime.
  • Work may include exposure to inclement weather conditions.
  • Business travel may be required periodically.
