Overview

The City of Chicago is seeking a Painter for the Department of Fleet and Facility Management, Bureau of Facility Operations. This position involves journey level work in the preparation and painting of various surfaces in municipal facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Read blueprints, specifications, and work orders to assess work required.
  • Apply primer, paint, stain, varnish and other finishes to multi-surfaces.
  • Clean and prepare surfaces to ensure proper adherence of finishes.
  • Fill and smooth holes, cracks, and joints with spackle, caulk, and compounds.
  • Remove old paint from various surfaces using multiple methods.
  • Erect scaffolding and ladders for painting work above ground level.
  • Mix latex and oil-based paints, tints primers, and prepares epoxies.
  • Paint viaducts, crosswalks, stripes parking lots, and apply street markings.
  • Load and unload equipment and supplies from work vehicle.
  • Spread drop cloths to protect equipment and surrounding areas.
  • Clean paint applicators, equipment, and work sites after jobs.
  • Prepare work activity reports.
  • Move furnishings and equipment to complete painting jobs as needed.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of a U.S. Department Of Labor Registered Painting Apprenticeship Training Program and Journeyman Status.
  • Successful completion of a company- or industry-sponsored apprenticeship training program as a painter plus two years of journey-level work experience.
  • Five years of journey-level work experience as a painter.
  • A valid State of Illinois driver's license is required.
  • Some positions may require completion of a U.S. Department of Labor Outreach Training Program (OSHA card).
  • Some positions may require an EPA Lead Abatement Certification.
  • Some positions may require previous work experience painting concrete viaducts and using paint for pavement markings.
