Overview
The Carpenter position at Metro-North Railroad involves cutting, shaping, and installing building materials for various structures including buildings, bridges, and work facilities. This role is part of the Maintenance of Way department and requires a strong understanding of carpentry practices and safety regulations.
Responsibilities
- Layout and frame wood and metal stud walls, and install sheetrock or wall paneling.
- Frame out and deck building roofs, overhangs, and canopies.
- Install and repair cabinet frames, doors, drawers, and countertops.
- Install and repair wood flooring using plywood, oak wood, or tongue and groove joints.
- Layout, install, and repair drop ceiling grids and tiles.
- Install and replace station platform edge boards using lag bolts.
- Fabricate and install wood staircases with railings according to safety codes.
- Install and repair wooden doors, door frames, and hinges.
- Construct and install wooden decks and railings for office trailers.
- Construct concrete forms to specified measurements.
- Shape or cut wood materials to specified measurements using tools.
- Transport material, tools, and equipment to job sites.
- Clear snow from station platforms and train yards.
- Perform other work as assigned under the scope of a B & B Mechanic.
Requirements
- Must have High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma.
- Vocational or apprentice training in carpentry or two years of carpentry experience.
- Must possess valid NYS Class D Driver’s License or equivalent.
- Must have personal tool box with Carpenter tools.
- Must be respirator qualified or able to become respirator qualified.
- Mechanical knowledge and ability to use carpentry tools.
- Ability to accurately measure distances and read ruler and tape measurements.
- Basic arithmetic skills and customer service orientation.
- Ability to follow instructions and work in teams.
- Knowledge of operating and safety rules and standards.
Additional Information
- Works outside exposed to various weather conditions.
- Must be able to lift and carry tools and material weighing up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to work various hours, days, shifts, and locations throughout Metro-North territory.
