Overview

Kennesaw State University is seeking an Engineering Lab Technician in Mechanical Engineering to provide hands-on technical services and practical application guidance to students and faculty in an undergraduate engineering research setting. The technician will maintain mechanical lab equipment and support the instructional mission of the College and University.

Responsibilities

• Prepares, maintains, troubleshoots and repairs mechanical engineering lab equipment.
• Prepares Standard Operating Procedures and safety guidelines for labs or equipment.
• Assists students and faculty with fabrication or 3D printing of components and ensures safe practices.
• Constructs complex precision components and mechanical devices using manual/CNC fabrication and/or 3D printing methods.
• Determines mechanical equipment supply quantities and ensures stock availability.
• Prepares, operates, trains, and oversees operation of a variety of mechanical equipment.
• Recommends and specifies new mechanical or aerospace engineering lab equipment or upgrades.
• Maintains and repairs engineering lab equipment and records.
• Purchases parts and components for machines and specimens.
• Maintains inventory and contributes to best safety practices.
• Completes periodic training courses to maintain knowledge and skills.
• Provides guidance regarding safe equipment operation and laboratory procedures.
• Fabricates and repairs university equipment.
• Works 10-30% each week across multiple departments on college-related tasks.
• Procures components and materials for fabrication and repair of laboratory systems.
• Manages an inventory of spare parts and enforces laboratory organization and cleanliness.

Requirements

• Associate's, technical, vocational or related degree and/or certificate from an accredited institution or equivalent experience.
• Current, valid and unrestricted driver's license.
• Knowledge of mechanical systems (pumps, hydraulics, heat exchangers, etc.).
• Basic electrical troubleshooting using a multimeter.
• Proficiency in the use of mechanical tooling (power and manual).
• Knowledge of mechanical and/or aerospace testing processes.
• Ability to efficiently learn G-code and various CNC machining equipment.
• Knowledge of engineering specifications for fabrication of parts.
• Operational knowledge of SolidWorks or similar CAD software.
• Proficiency in or ability to learn elementary chemistry and physics.
