Overview

Valmont is a Fortune 1000 company focused on advancing agricultural productivity and infrastructure. The Sub Arc Base Welder Helper position is a temporary nine-month role designed to support the Sub Arc Base Welder in producing steel utility poles and structures while gaining hands-on experience in submerged arc welding operations.

Responsibilities

• Assist the Base Welder with setting up welding equipment and fixtures.
• Support the loading, positioning, and alignment of pole shafts and base plates.
• Assist with machine setup and preparation to ensure production readiness.
• Chip slag and clean weld areas to maintain quality standards.
• Prepare and stage materials, consumables, and tooling for upcoming jobs.
• Set up the next welding station while the current pole is being welded.
• Perform daily preventive maintenance activities on welding equipment.
• Maintain housekeeping standards within the work area.
• Assist with weld preparation activities, including grinding and inspection support.
• Observe welding operations and learn machine controls and procedures.
• Support quality inspections and corrective actions as directed.
• Follow all safety procedures and work instructions.
• Participate in LEAN initiatives and continuous improvement activities.
• Perform other duties as assigned to support production requirements.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
• Ability to read a tape measure and perform basic mathematical calculations.
• Ability to learn welding processes, equipment operation, and manufacturing procedures.
• Ability to safely lift up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to work in a manufacturing environment and remain on feet for extended periods.
• Willingness to learn and accept coaching from certified welders and supervisors.
• Strong attendance and work performance record.
• Commitment to workplace safety and quality standards.
