Overview

The Structural Welder position involves selecting materials and equipment, planning layouts, and performing various welding techniques to assemble structural forms according to specifications. Responsibilities

  • Selects type and size of pipe or other related materials and equipment according to specifications.
  • Plans layouts, assembly, and welding using knowledge of geometry and physical properties of metal.
  • Uses various welding processes including Gas-Metal Arc, Flux-Cored Arc, Gas-Tungsten Arc, Submerged Arc, or Shielded Metal Arc.
  • Lays out, positions, aligns, and fits components together in various body positions.
  • Bolts, clamps, and welds together metal components using arc and arc gas welding equipment.
  • Connects cable from welding unit to obtain specified amperage, voltage, slope, and pulse.
  • Obtains specified electrode and prepares it for use in welding.
  • Assembles structural forms such as machinery frames, tanks, and pressure vessels according to blueprints.

Requirements

  • Capable of certifying on multi-process pipe and proficient in SMAW, GTAW, and GMAW welding processes.
  • Able to produce welds that meet NDE (non-destructive examination) requirements.

What you'll be running

This posting calls for MIG, TIG, Stick, and Flux-Core work. MIG (GMAW) feeds a continuous wire electrode through a shielding-gas nozzle. It lays down metal fast and is forgiving on clean material, which is why it dominates production and light fabrication work. TIG (GTAW) uses a non-consumable tungsten electrode with filler added by hand, giving the operator the most control of any process. It is slow, demanding, and the standard for stainless, aluminum, and anything where the bead has to look as good as it holds.
