Overview

The 5 Process Welder position involves working as a Combination Fab Shop Welder proficient in various welding processes including SMAW, GTAW, FCAW, GMAW, and SUB ARC. The role requires the ability to certify on multi-process pipe and may involve x-ray qualities.

Responsibilities

  • Lays out, aligns and welds fabricated, cast and forged components to assemble structural forms according to blueprints and metallurgy.
  • Selects type and size of pipe or other related materials and equipment according to specifications.
  • Plans layouts, assembly, and welding, applying knowledge of geometry and physical properties of metal.
  • Positions, aligns and fits components together in various body positions.
  • Bolts, clamps and welds together metal components using arc and gas welding equipment.
  • Connects cable from welding unit to obtain specified amperage, voltage, slope and pulse.
  • Starts power supply to produce electric current and strikes arc to generate heat for welding.
  • Guides electrode or gun along weld-line to form specified depth of fusion and bead.
  • May manually apply filler rod and clean or degrease weld joint or workplace.
  • Examines weld for bead size and other specifications.
  • Loads, transports and unloads material, tools, equipment and supplies.
  • Assists in lifting, positioning and securing of materials during installation.
  • Performs minor maintenance or cleaning activities of tools and equipment.

Requirements

  • May require a high school diploma or its equivalent with previous experience in the field.
  • Knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures within welding.
  • Must pass employer performance tests or standard tests to meet certification standards.
  • Responsible for observing and complying with all safety and project rules.
  • Ability to work within precise limits or standards of accuracy.
  • Must apply basic mathematics to solve problems.
  • Ability to visualize objects in three dimensions from plans and drawings.
  • May require respiratory protection.

What you'll be running

This posting calls for Stick and Flux-Core work. Stick (SMAW) burns a flux-coated consumable rod and needs no shielding gas, so it works in wind, rain, and on dirty or rusted steel. That tolerance for bad conditions keeps it the default for field, structural, and repair work. Flux-cored (FCAW) runs a hollow wire filled with flux, combining MIG-like deposition rates with the outdoor tolerance of stick. It is the workhorse on heavy structural steel and shipbuilding, where thick sections and long welds reward speed.
