Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and self-motivated Welder / Custom Fabricator to join a fabrication team in Bryan, TX. This is a true fabrication role-not a high-volume production line job. You will be responsible for taking complex structural and custom engineering prints, laying out raw materials, cutting, precision fitting, welding, and finishing complete assemblies with minimal supervision. The primary focus of this position is high-quality TIG (GTAW) welding on stainless steel, supplemented by GMAW and FCAW processes on various alloys.

Responsibilities: Interpret and work directly from detailed engineering drawings, blueprints, weld symbols, and job specifications to build finished custom assemblies. Perform layout, measuring, cutting, grinding, fitting, tacking, and full welding of structural and custom sheet/plate components. Execute high-integrity TIG (GTAW) welds primarily on stainless steel, maintaining accurate fit-up, heat control, and aesthetic weld appearance. Perform MIG (GMAW) and Flux-Cored (FCAW) welding on structural steel and heavy components as required by project specifications. Utilize shop tools and fabrication equipment safely, including plasma cutters, ironworkers, band saws, angle grinders, drill presses, and hydraulic presses/brakes. Inspect workpieces for dimensional accuracy, joint alignment, squareness, and weld quality using precision measurement tools. Finish completed weldments by grinding, blending, and polishing stainless steel surfaces to meet finish standards. Work independently to solve fit-up challenges and optimize fabrication steps while keeping project timelines on track. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area, adhering to all shop safety standards and guidelines.

Working hours: 6:00 AM - 6:00 PM

Skills: Formal vocational training, apprenticeship, or Associate Degree in Welding/Fabrication Technology. Active or prior welding certifications (e.g., AWS D1.1, AWS D1.6, or ASME Section IX). Experience with stainless steel sanitary/food-grade finishing or high-pressure piping/vessel fabrication. Familiarity operating press brakes, CNC plasma cutting tables, or plate rolls.

Education: Trade

Experience: 4-7 years

Qualifications: 4+ years of proven custom metal fabrication and TIG welding experience. Advanced skills in TIG (GTAW) welding on stainless steel across various material thicknesses and positions; proficient in GMAW and FCAW processes. Demonstrated ability to read and interpret complex engineering prints, shop drawings, geometric tolerances, and standard AWS weld symbols. Strong mastery of layout techniques, material yield optimization, precision cutting, alignment, and assembly setup with minimal oversight. Solid understanding of shop math, geometry, and proficiency with precision measuring devices (calipers, tape measures, protractors, height gauges). Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, stand/bend/kneel for extended periods, and operate shop material handling equipment safely.

How this job compares in Bryan, TX

Pay in context

At roughly $34/hr, this posting sits about 34% above the $25/hr median for welder fabricator jobs across Texas — toward the top of a $22–$28/hr middle band drawn from 38 postings with published pay. Put another way, it pays more than about 89% of the comparable postings we have wage data for. Pay that far above local median usually comes attached to something: a harder cert requirement, travel, night shift, or overtime that isn't really optional. Worth establishing which before you accept.

The local market in Bryan, TX

This is the only active welding job we're currently tracking in Bryan, TX, which makes it worth moving on quickly — there is no local competing offer to weigh it against. Across Texas as a whole we're tracking 1,007 other active welding openings from 460 employers. Browse welding jobs across Texas.

Spherion currently has 1 other opening live in Texas, which is usually a sign of either steady growth or steady turnover — worth asking which in the interview.

The most active employers in Texas at the moment, by number of open welding reqs, are Austin Industries (30), Welding Shop in Austin, TX (27), and Zachry Group (21). Volume like that usually means either a genuine expansion or a staffing agency working several client sites — worth knowing which before you apply.

Within Texas, the best-paying metros we track by median hourly rate are Pasadena at $36/hr, Midlothian at $35/hr, and Dallas at $33/hr. If you can relocate or commute, that spread is worth factoring in.

What you'll be running

This posting calls for MIG, TIG, and Flux-Core work. MIG (GMAW) feeds a continuous wire electrode through a shielding-gas nozzle. It lays down metal fast and is forgiving on clean material, which is why it dominates production and light fabrication work. TIG (GTAW) uses a non-consumable tungsten electrode with filler added by hand, giving the operator the most control of any process. It is slow, demanding, and the standard for stainless, aluminum, and anything where the bead has to look as good as it holds.

Certifications this posting mentions

  • AWS D1.1 — the American Welding Society's Structural Welding Code for steel. It governs almost all building and structural steel work in the US, so a D1.1 qualification is the baseline credential for construction and ironworking.
  • ASME Section IX — the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code qualification. It covers welding on pressure-retaining equipment — boilers, vessels, and process piping — where a failed weld is a safety incident rather than a rework ticket.

Read straight from this posting's text. Confirm the exact qualification the employer wants before you test — requirements vary by shop even under the same code.
