Overview

MTA Metro-North Railroad is a dynamic organization operating out of Grand Central Terminal, providing service to over 86.5 million customers in New York and Connecticut. The Carman position involves maintaining, inspecting, repairing, and modifying mechanical equipment on rail rolling stock.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect, maintain, and repair car body components on all rail rolling stock.
  • Install all car body glazing on rail rolling stock.
  • Perform periodic visual inspections of train components to repair or replace defective parts.
  • Inspect and repair safety devices, wheels, truck components, and traction mechanisms.
  • Operate support equipment while performing inspections, repairs, and maintenance.
  • Inspect, repair, and maintain air brake systems on passenger equipment.
  • Install mechanical train car modifications according to manufacturer specifications.
  • Apply paint stenciling, lettering, and train decals on car bodies.
  • Complete required documentation to comply with Metro-North, State, and Federal requirements.
  • Perform welding on components and equipment related to passenger rolling stock.
  • Reference written documents while troubleshooting or maintaining equipment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Must have High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma or Test Assessing Secondary Completion (TASC).
  • Completion of vocational or apprentice training as a Machinist or Mechanic or two years of experience as a Mechanic or Carpenter.
  • Prior experience repairing, installing, or maintaining heavy equipment is preferred.
  • Familiarity with the basic operation of mechanical equipment is preferred.
  • Burning and/or welding qualifications required for certain positions.
  • Must become and maintain Qualified Maintenance Personnel (QMP) qualification.
  • Hearing conservation may be needed for some positions.

Additional Information

  • Must be able and willing to work various shifts, Metro-North locations, and days.
  • This is a federally regulated position subject to pre-employment and continuous random toxicological screening.
  • Employees driving company vehicles must complete defensive driver training every three years.
