The Structural Fabricator is responsible for safely handling raw materials, reading shop drawings, and fabricating structural steel and other metal assemblies to specification. The role requires strong welding skills and attention to detail, along with mentoring less experienced fabricators.

Responsibilities

  • Receive, identify, and handle raw material safely using overhead cranes, forklifts, and rigging.
  • Read shop drawings, cut lists, weld maps, and weld symbols, and pull the correct material.
  • Saw, cut, cope, drill, and punch steel using band saws, plasma, torch, and an iron worker.
  • Lay out, fit up, and tack assemblies to drawing dimensions and tolerances.
  • Fabricate structural steel, miscellaneous metals, sheet metal, and pipe assemblies to specification.
  • Weld in flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead positions using GMAW, FCAW, and SMAW.
  • Perform visual weld inspection and dimensional checks against drawings and AWS D1.1.
  • Identify and correct defects before sign-off.
  • Complete and sign off weld map travelers, recording welder ID, process, and inspection results for each weld.
  • Mark and tag finished pieces for coatings and shipping.
  • Keep a clean, safe, organized work area and maintain your equipment.
  • Mentor less experienced fabricators and welders.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of hands-on structural steel fabrication and welding experience.
  • Able to read and interpret shop drawings, weld maps, weld symbols, and fabrication tolerances.
  • Working knowledge of AWS D1.1 Structural Welding Code.
  • Experience completing weld maps, travelers, or other QC documentation.
  • Experienced with overhead cranes, forklifts, and safe rigging practices.
  • Skilled with layout tools, tape, squares, levels, and fit-up techniques.
  • Strong attention to detail and precision in your work.

How this job compares in Holland, OH

Pay in context

At roughly $33/hr, this posting sits about 25% above the $26/hr median for welding jobs across Ohio — toward the top of a $23–$31/hr middle band drawn from 100 postings with published pay. Put another way, it pays more than about 81% of the comparable postings we have wage data for. Pay that far above local median usually comes attached to something: a harder cert requirement, travel, night shift, or overtime that isn't really optional. Worth establishing which before you accept.

The local market in Holland, OH

This is the only active welding job we're currently tracking in Holland, OH, which makes it worth moving on quickly — there is no local competing offer to weigh it against. Across Ohio as a whole we're tracking 168 other active welding openings from 105 employers. Browse welding jobs across Ohio.

The most active employers in Ohio at the moment, by number of open welding reqs, are Kadant Black Clawson LLC (5), TP Mechanical (5), and Welding Shop in Cleveland, OH (5). Volume like that usually means either a genuine expansion or a staffing agency working several client sites — worth knowing which before you apply.

Within Ohio, the best-paying metros we track by median hourly rate are Columbus at $30/hr, Cincinnati at $25/hr, and Cleveland at $24/hr. If you can relocate or commute, that spread is worth factoring in.

What you'll be running

This posting calls for Stick and Flux-Core work. Stick (SMAW) burns a flux-coated consumable rod and needs no shielding gas, so it works in wind, rain, and on dirty or rusted steel. That tolerance for bad conditions keeps it the default for field, structural, and repair work. Flux-cored (FCAW) runs a hollow wire filled with flux, combining MIG-like deposition rates with the outdoor tolerance of stick. It is the workhorse on heavy structural steel and shipbuilding, where thick sections and long welds reward speed.

Certifications this posting mentions

  • AWS D1.1 — the American Welding Society's Structural Welding Code for steel. It governs almost all building and structural steel work in the US, so a D1.1 qualification is the baseline credential for construction and ironworking.
  • CWI — the AWS Certified Welding Inspector credential. It is an inspection qualification rather than a welding one, requiring documented experience plus a three-part exam, and it is the usual route off the torch into QC.

Read straight from this posting's text. Confirm the exact qualification the employer wants before you test — requirements vary by shop even under the same code.
