Overview

The Welder/Mechanic position at the San Diego Convention Center involves performing repair and maintenance on the Corporation's equipment and machinery, including welding and mechanical shop operations. This is a Union position requiring open availability and adherence to safety protocols.

Responsibilities

  • Perform FCAW, GMAW, with knowledge of GTAW, SMAW and analyze weld types for project needs.
  • Provide creative fabrication solutions for unique job challenges.
  • Maintain and repair Corporation equipment such as forklifts, scissor lifts, and generators.
  • Inspect, troubleshoot, and repair equipment malfunctions using testing instruments.
  • Interpret blueprints/drawings and welding symbols to complete fabrication projects.
  • Perform repairs on engines, transmissions, brakes, and other components.
  • Document all work and assets in the computerized maintenance management system.
  • Verify completed work for conformance with building standards and codes.
  • Inspect contractor work to ensure it meets specifications and building codes.
  • Identify and correct unsafe working conditions with management oversight.
  • Clean, maintain, and service tools and equipment used in duties.
  • Update drawings and documentation to reflect current systems.
  • Follow maintenance and repair procedures including preventative and corrective maintenance.
  • Attend training programs as designated.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of materials, equipment, and tools related to plumbing, electrical, HVAC systems, and carpentry.
  • Comply with safety and risk management policies and procedures.
  • Report all accidents and injuries in a timely manner.
  • Participate in regular safety meetings and training.
  • Apply OSHA and local safety requirements to all assigned work.
  • Review inventory to ensure adequate stock of common items.
  • Maintain a safe and clean work environment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent plus completion of a craft apprenticeship program or on-the-job training providing journeyman level experience.
  • Three years related journeyman level experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Valid California driver’s license.
  • Ability to read and interpret building drawings, specifications, and technical procedures.
  • Ability to discuss technical information professionally and courteously.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical operations.
  • Robust knowledge of Microsoft applications including Word, Excel, Outlook, and ERP systems.
  • Ability to maneuver throughout the facility and respond to emergency situations.
  • Ability to work from elevated platforms and perform physical tasks.
  • Frequent lifting/moving of up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities including close vision and depth perception.
  • Awareness of and use proper personal protection equipment.

Additional Information

  • This is a Union position with IBEW Local 569, AFL-CIO.
  • Schedule is determined based on seniority; open availability is required.
  • The San Diego Convention Center operates 24/7; hours outside the standard schedule may be required.
