Overview

Upchurch is a rapidly growing, full-service building engineering company providing mechanical, plumbing, HVAC, and electrical services across the southeastern United States. The Apprentice Pipefitter assists in the fabrication, installation, assembly, and maintenance of piping systems for commercial mechanical construction projects, gaining hands-on training in pipefitting practices.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the fabrication, installation, and maintenance of piping systems for commercial mechanical, HVAC, plumbing, and fire protection projects.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, specifications, and drawings to understand piping layouts, material requirements, and installation procedures.
  • Measure, cut, thread, groove, pro press, bend, fit, and assemble piping systems under the direction of experienced pipefitters.
  • Assist in preparing, fabricating, and installing copper, stainless steel, and carbon steel piping systems.
  • Install hangers, supports, valves, and related piping components according to project requirements.
  • Perform leak testing and inspections to ensure quality and system integrity.
  • Safely operate hand tools, power tools, grinders, drills, beveling machines, and other trade-related equipment.
  • Assist with material handling, rigging, and hoisting operations using chains, slings, shackles, and other approved equipment.
  • Operate forklifts and manlifts when properly trained and authorized.
  • Support pipefitters with layout and coordination of pipe installations.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
  • Follow all company safety policies, OSHA regulations, and project safety requirements.
  • Complete assigned tasks efficiently while learning industry best practices and pipefitting techniques.
  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.

Requirements

  • Minimum 1-3 years of construction, mechanical, industrial, or pipefitting-related experience preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of pipefitting, plumbing, HVAC, or mechanical construction is preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret basic blueprints, drawings, and specifications is a plus.
  • Mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn pipe fabrication and installation techniques.
  • Basic math skills for measurements and material calculations.
  • Ability to use measuring devices and common hand and power tools safely.
  • Strong work ethic, dependability, and willingness to learn from experienced team members.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work effectively as part of a team.
  • OSHA 10 certification preferred but not required.
  • Strong commitment to workplace safety and quality workmanship.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull construction materials and equipment.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and from ladders, scaffolds, and manlifts at various heights.
