Overview

The Pipe Welder is responsible for the installation, repair, and construction of industrial refrigeration systems for ammonia piping and other related piping systems, working primarily with carbon and stainless-steel materials.

Responsibilities

  • Install, repair, and construct industrial refrigeration systems for ammonia piping.
  • Work on structural frames, pipe supports, equipment, and steel supports.
  • Achieve documented welding certification for stick welding of Carbon Steel and/or Stainless-Steel pressure piping.
  • Use hand tools and sketches to complete tasks.
  • Direct helpers in limited tasks.
  • Clamp, hold, tack-weld, heat-bend, grind or bolt component parts for welding.
  • Prepare material surfaces to be welded, ensuring cleanliness.
  • Remove rough spots from work pieces using grinders and scrapers.
  • Chip or grind off excess weld, slag, or spatter.
  • Weld steel structures and components in flat or vertical positions.

Requirements

  • Recognize, set up, and operate hand and power tools common to the welding trade.
  • Examine work pieces for defects and measure for conformance with specifications.
  • Monitor fitting, burning, and welding processes to avoid material distortion.
  • Select and install torches, torch tips, filler rods, and flux according to specifications.
  • Ignite torches or start power supplies and strike arcs for welding.
  • Detect faulty operation of equipment or defective materials.
  • Connect and adjust gas flow and pressure for desired flames.
  • Operate manual or semi-automatic welding equipment using various processes.
  • Lay out, position, align, and secure parts prior to assembly.
