Overview

The Welder A position requires a candidate with 4 years of welding experience in the petrochemical industry, capable of performing X-ray-quality welding using SMAW and GTAW processes. The role includes responsibilities beyond welding, such as pipe fitting and rigging, while ensuring compliance with code work requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Perform X-ray-quality welding in all positions using SMAW and GTAW with various electrodes.
  • Weld piping, structural steel, and supports.
  • Ensure all hold points and requirements on code work are met.
  • Conduct field-determined measurements and fabricate or modify piping per sketches and blueprints.
  • Set up jobs, string welding leads, and build fireboxes in preparation for welding.
  • Perform tasks such as pipe fitting, rigging, and boilermaker duties as directed.

Requirements

  • 4 years of welding experience in the petrochemical industry or a related field.
  • Required weld-testing certifications from Starcon.
  • Basic understanding of isometric drawings and blueprints.
  • Ability to read and understand WPS/PQR documents.
  • Competent to verify fit-ups and dimensions.
  • Mathematical skills related to work tasks.
  • Ability to pass appropriate weld tests given by Starcon or the client.
  • Experience welding in confined spaces and awkward positions.
  • Ability to work under supplied air and with respiratory protection.
  • Basic rigging knowledge associated with moving piping details and fittings.

What you'll be running

Stick (SMAW) burns a flux-coated consumable rod and needs no shielding gas, so it works in wind, rain, and on dirty or rusted steel. That tolerance for bad conditions keeps it the default for field, structural, and repair work.
