Overview

The GSMR Steam Shop is seeking a Welder I to support the operations and maintenance of the GSMR fleet of passenger and freight cars, locomotives, and mechanical inventory. This full-time position is based in Dillsboro, NC, and requires skills in various welding processes.

Responsibilities

  • Manufacture and repair parts and components for steam and diesel locomotives and railroad cars.
  • Fabricate parts from scratch for various applications and projects.
  • Inspect and recommend repair or replacement of rolling stock parts.
  • Interpret instructions and specifications, including reading blueprints.
  • Collaborate with Car Shop, Maintenance of Way, and Operations teams.

Requirements

  • Proven ability to weld MIG, TIG, and ARC.
  • Knowledge of structural welding, especially running 6010 and 7018 in all positions.
  • Ability to weld stainless steel holding tanks.
  • Ability to heat, cut, and braze using oxy-acetylene or oxy-propane torches.
  • Experience operating heavy equipment such as loader, forklift, and tractor.
  • Ability to use a variety of shop and mechanical tools.
  • Relevant experience working on railroad equipment or track is a plus.
  • Effective communication skills with management and staff.
  • Willingness to learn new skills specific to historic railroad work.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and pass preemployment drug screening and Physical Capabilities Exam.
  • Compliance with GSMR, OSHA, FRA, and safety procedures.

  • Work primarily in an industrial/railroad environment with outdoor work in all weather conditions.
  • Must be able to lift over 50 pounds and work in confined spaces.
  • Full-time work with a minimum of 40 hours and overtime as needed.

What you'll be running
