Overview

Welder 1 is responsible for welding and fabricating projects in a shop setting, including cutting, fitting, tacking, welding, and grinding on various materials. The position requires effective communication with team members to ensure safe and efficient work. Whitaker Construction, founded in 1953, is a large contractor in the intermountain area with extensive experience in heavy civil and underground utility construction.

Responsibilities

• Position, layout, fit up, cut, and weld material according to shop drawings and supervisor directions.
• Operate tooling and equipment such as a torch, plasma arc cutter, grinder, and pipe bender.
• Work safely in a shop setting around heavy equipment including ironworkers, press brakes, forklifts, and overhead cranes.
• Load and unload equipment and materials.
• Maintain tools as required to perform the job.
• Perform all job duties following company safety rules and proper use of personal protective equipment.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED preferred; vocational training is strongly desired.
• 1-2 years of welding experience preferred.
• Education or work-related credential from a secondary or post-secondary educational system is preferred.
• Understanding of engineering drawings and welding symbols.
• Ability to comprehend a Bill of Material to determine necessary materials and requirements.
• 1 year or more of welding/fabrication work experience that meets or exceeds performance expectations.
• Ability to read and interpret all AWS basic weld symbols and typical welding symbols.
• Frequent use of basic hand and measurement tools.
• Ability to detect unsafe or hazardous conditions of equipment and work environment.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
• Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
