Overview

Blue Island Recycling is seeking a dependable and experienced Industrial Welder/Mechanic to join our second-shift team. This hands-on position involves working with heavy scrap-processing equipment, including a large industrial hammer mill/shredder used to process automobiles and other scrap metal.

Responsibilities

  • Perform welding and fabrication repairs on the scrap metal hammer mill/shredder and related equipment.
  • Weld, cut, grind, fabricate, reinforce, and repair heavy steel components.
  • Inspect equipment and identify worn, cracked, damaged, or broken components requiring repair.
  • Perform light-to-medium duty mechanical repairs on industrial and recycling equipment.
  • Inspect, repair, and replace damaged or leaking hydraulic and other equipment hoses.
  • Assist with troubleshooting mechanical problems and equipment breakdowns.
  • Remove and replace worn or damaged mechanical components.
  • Perform routine equipment inspections and assist with preventative maintenance.
  • Drain oil, fuel, coolant, and other fluids from large trucks and vehicles prior to processing.
  • Properly collect, contain, and handle drained vehicle fluids.
  • Safely operate welding equipment, cutting torches, grinders, hand tools, power tools, and other maintenance equipment.
  • Assist with repairs and maintenance on other equipment throughout the facility as needed.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area.
  • Follow all company safety procedures, including lockout/tagout requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.

Requirements

  • Previous welding experience required.
  • Heavy fabrication and/or industrial welding experience strongly preferred.
  • Prior experience working in a scrap metal yard, recycling facility, or similar heavy industrial environment strongly preferred.
  • Mechanical repair, equipment repair, or industrial maintenance experience preferred.
  • Experience welding and repairing heavy steel or industrial equipment strongly preferred.
  • Ability to safely use welding equipment, cutting torches, grinders, hand tools, and power tools.
  • Basic knowledge of hydraulic hoses and mechanical systems preferred.
  • Ability to perform basic mechanical troubleshooting and repairs.
  • Must be comfortable working around large industrial machinery and heavy equipment.
  • Must be dependable and able to work the full scheduled shift.
  • Must be able to work safely in an active industrial environment.
  • Ability to speak Spanish is a plus, but not required.

Additional Information

  • This position is located at an active scrap metal recycling and processing facility.
  • Employees work around heavy machinery, trucks, industrial equipment, scrap metal, dirt, dust, grease, noise, and changing weather conditions.
  • This is a hands-on position requiring physical work in an industrial environment.
  • Schedule is Monday through Friday from 2:00 PM to 2:00 AM with weekends off.
  • This is a full-time, second-shift position.
