Overview

The Fitter/Welder position at Schuff Steel involves expertise in steel and bridge fabrication to assemble and fit various structural materials for complex projects in the commercial building, bridge, and industrial sectors. The role requires proficiency in welding and knowledge of blueprints and heat reactions of structural metals.

Responsibilities

  • Follow applicable welding procedures (AWS, AISC).
  • Weld in various positions on the ground level, above ground, and below ground.
  • Chip, peen, and grind material to prepare for welding or finish.
  • Weld structural materials such as plates, sheets, and girders under close tolerances.
  • Straighten materials by heat or flame.
  • Perform gouging and scarfing as needed.
  • Take and pass welding test in accordance with AWS D1.1.
  • Receive instructions, prints, sketches, and work orders.
  • Read and interpret blueprints and plan fitting operations.
  • Direct and assist in handling and spreading of material according to detail drawings.
  • Lay out work lines or fit up jigs for positioning material when required.
  • Ensure work conforms to drawings and notes.
  • Clean up material by grinding or chipping.
  • Burn and tack weld for assembly purposes.
  • Spot paint for identification marks.
  • Move material and welding equipment as necessary.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area.
  • Perform other routine duties as directed by management.
  • Adhere to safety rules and PPE requirements.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • 12 months of stable work experience.
  • Must pass required weld test and fitter test.
  • Ability to use a variety of hand tools and welding equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating instructions, and blueprints.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical operations.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions.
