Overview

A Schuff Steel Production Fitter-Welder utilizes expertise in steel and bridge fabrication to assemble and fit various structural, plate, and mechanical materials for complex projects in commercial building, bridge, and industrial sectors. This role requires proficiency in welding and the ability to interpret blueprints, ensuring high-quality workmanship.

Responsibilities

  • Follows applicable welding procedures (AWS, AISC).
  • Welds in various positions on the ground level, above ground, and below ground.
  • Chips, peens, and grinds material to prepare for welding or finish.
  • Welds structural materials such as plates, sheets, and girders under close tolerances.
  • Straightens materials by heat or flame.
  • Performs gouging and scarfing as needed.
  • Takes and passes welding test in accordance with AWS D1.1.
  • Receives instructions, prints, sketches, and work orders.
  • Reads and interprets blueprints and plans fitting operations.
  • Directs and assists in handling and spreading material according to detail drawings.
  • Lays out work lines or fits up jigs for positioning material.
  • Checks, squares, and scribes all detail connections.
  • Ensures work conforms to drawings and notes.
  • Cleans up material by grinding or chipping.
  • Burns and tack welds for assembly purposes.
  • Moves material and welding equipment to and from the work area.
  • Maintains a clean and organized work area.
  • Performs other routine duties as directed by management.
  • Adheres to all safety rules and PPE requirements.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • 12 months of stable work experience.
  • Must pass required weld test and fitter test.
  • Ability to use a variety of hand tools and welding equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating instructions, and blueprints.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical operations.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions.
