Overview

The Car Inspector (Subway Car Mechanic) position at New York City Transit involves maintaining, inspecting, and repairing subway cars under supervision. This civil service role requires passing a civil service exam for permanent status and offers competitive hourly wages with various benefits.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain, inspect, test, examine, lubricate, troubleshoot, and repair subway cars.
  • Work on electrical, electronic, mechanical, and pneumatic equipment.
  • Keep records and prepare reports related to inspections and repairs.
  • Operate and maintain equipment associated with subway car maintenance.
  • Detect trouble on subway cars and make necessary repairs on the road.

Requirements

  • Must pass a civil service exam for permanent status.
  • Three years of full-time satisfactory experience as a journey-level mechanic.
  • Two years of experience plus completion of relevant education or training.
  • Ability to understand and communicate in English.
  • Must pass a drug screening and background investigation.
