Overview

The Fab Shop Pipe Welder is responsible for setting up and welding metal components, identifying and repairing defects in welded pipes, and ensuring compliance with safety policies. The role requires proficiency in various welding positions and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate welding machines in the fabrication of metal products and assemblies.
  • Manually guide electrode or gun along weld line to form specified depth of fusion and bead.
  • Weld in flat, horizontal, and vertical positions.
  • Self-examine weld for bead size, surface finish, and compliance with specifications.
  • Clean or degrease weld joint or work piece.
  • Chip off excess weld, slag, and spatter.
  • Position and clamp work pieces together or assemble them in jig or fixture.
  • Tack assemblies together.
  • Identify areas of pipe requiring repair through visual inspection.
  • Position pipe on repair rack to facilitate the repair process.
  • Perform necessary preparatory work by grinding or preheating pipe.
  • Comply with all safety rules.
  • Pass all annual weld tests.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.

  • Must be physically able to perform essential functions of the job.
  • Must be able to read and interpret safety rules, operating instructions, and pipe drawings.
  • Must be able to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Must be able to speak effectively with supervisors and other employees.
  • Must be able to perform basic arithmetic operations.
  • Must be able to accurately read a tape measure.
  • Must be able to understand and execute written, oral, or diagram instructions.
  • Must be able to recognize and solve problems involving concrete variables.
  • Must be able to use company computer systems to view dispatch lists.
  • Must be able to read, write, and effectively communicate in English.
  • Must be able to read and interpret blueprints and weld procedures.
