Overview

The Plant Utilities Engineer 1 operates, maintains, troubleshoots, repairs, tests, and calibrates mechanical and electrical equipment in campus or residential settings, ensuring safe and efficient operation of systems such as heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and electrical distribution.

Responsibilities

• Operate steam and hot water boilers including lighting off, firing, cleaning and shutting down systems.
• Operate central and auxiliary computers that monitor, test, control and operate boilers and HVAC systems.
• Service and maintain residential heating and air conditioning equipment.
• Conduct testing of boiler, HVAC, and water systems, analyzing results and adding chemicals as needed.
• Operate large central absorption, centrifugal, screw driven and hermetic chiller systems and other refrigeration equipment.
• Perform operations and maintenance within an asbestos environment and supervise asbestos removal projects.
• Handle hazardous materials such as refrigerants, fuel oil, and solvents.
• Respond to incidents with potential environmental impact and implement evacuation plans in emergencies.
• Work in confined spaces using personal protective equipment and supervise others in confined spaces.
• Travel within the district and NY State for special projects.
• Receive training in operation and maintenance procedures related to Asbestos Containing Materials.

Requirements

• Graduate of a heating, HVAC, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration apprenticeship program from the U.S. Air Force.
• Enlisted machinery technician with the U.S. Coast Guard or possession of a Marine Engineer certificate.
• Enlisted power generation equipment repairer with the U.S. Army.
• Enlisted gas turbine systems technician or related roles with the U.S. Navy.
• Possession of a Merchant Mariner’s Document and experience in the engine department.
• Completion of a New York State Department of Labor registered apprenticeship program for stationary engineers or HVAC.
• Possession of a High-Pressure Boiler Operating Engineer License or Stationary Engineer License.
• Bachelor’s degree in Facilities Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Marine Engineering.
• Four years of full-time hands-on experience in maintenance and operation of HVAC systems or boilers.
• Associate’s degree in HVAC and two years of qualifying experience.
• Completion of an HVAC certificate or diploma and two years of qualifying experience.
• Working knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the trade.
• Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
• Basic computer skills preferred.
• Valid NYS driver’s License.

• This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS).
• Starting salary reflects the downstate adjustment.
• Preference will be given to OPWDD employees impacted by closures.
