Overview

The Tube/Stainless/Structural Welder position involves selecting materials and equipment for welding processes, laying out and assembling components, and ensuring welds meet specific requirements. Responsibilities

  • Selects type and size of pipe or other related materials and equipment according to specifications.
  • Plans layouts, assembly, and welding, applying knowledge of geometry and physical properties of metal machining.
  • Uses various welding processes including Gas-Metal Arc, Flux-Cored Arc, Gas-Tungsten Arc, Submerged Arc, or Shielded Metal Arc.
  • Positions, aligns, and fits components together in various body positions.
  • Bolts, clamps, and welds together metal components using arc and arc gas welding equipment.
  • Connects cable from welding unit to obtain specified amperage, voltage, slope, and pulse.
  • Inserts electrode into portable holder or threads consumable electrode wire through portable welding gun.
  • Lays out, aligns, and welds fabricated, cast, and forged components to assemble structural forms according to blueprints.

Requirements

  • Capable of certifying on multi-process pipe being proficient in SMAW, GTAW, and GMAW welding processes.
  • Capable of producing welds that will meet NDE (non-destructive examination) requirements.

What you'll be running

This posting calls for MIG, TIG, Stick, and Flux-Core work. MIG (GMAW) feeds a continuous wire electrode through a shielding-gas nozzle. It lays down metal fast and is forgiving on clean material, which is why it dominates production and light fabrication work. TIG (GTAW) uses a non-consumable tungsten electrode with filler added by hand, giving the operator the most control of any process. It is slow, demanding, and the standard for stainless, aluminum, and anything where the bead has to look as good as it holds.
