Overview

The Lead Mechanic/Equipment Operator Labor (LM/EOL) is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, and repairing heavy equipment and vehicles used in toll operations and emergency response at the Chicago Skyway Toll Bridge. This safety-sensitive position requires a CDL and adherence to DOT regulations, including mandatory drug and alcohol testing.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect, diagnose, and repair heavy equipment and vehicles.
  • Work 12-hour shifts if required.
  • Be on-call and available during snow events.
  • Make road calls for emergency repairs.
  • Perform gas and electric welding.
  • Diagnose automotive, truck, and heavy equipment malfunctions.
  • Maintain inventory control and other records.
  • Complete engine, transmission, or front suspension overhaul.
  • Replace or repair major engine, transmission, differential, suspension or electrical components.
  • Perform routine preventative work.
  • Install automobile, truck and heavy equipment accessories.
  • Modify equipment for additional usage.
  • Perform diagnosis of mechanical or electrical breakdowns.
  • Maintain service records for work completed.
  • Perform Equipment Operator/Laborer duties as required.
  • Work closely with vendors and order parts through Concur.
  • Collaborate with Administrative Assistant on ordering/receiving parts.
  • Possess own tools not covered by SCC.
  • Work closely with secondary mechanic to ensure correct work performance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Extensive knowledge of automobile, truck and heavy equipment functions, systems and repairs.
  • Practical knowledge of appropriate safety precautions.
  • Ability to use sophisticated electronic diagnostic equipment and repair manuals.
  • Ability to troubleshoot electrical problems.
  • Strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.
  • Possess a CDL Class B at a minimum with air brake endorsement.
  • Advanced training and competencies that enhance job performance.
  • Experience with process improvement or industry-specific tools.
  • Microsoft Excel and basic office computer skills.

Additional Information

  • Position operates in a garage facility and in the field environment.
  • May involve occasional lifting of up to 75 pounds and exposure to outdoor conditions.
  • Willing to work more than 8 hours a day if needed.
