Job Description

Overview

Vast is developing next-generation space stations and infrastructure with a focus on low-cost and hardware-rich approaches. The company is seeking a Materials & Processes Engineer – Metallics to support the design and build of human-rated space stations.

Responsibilities

  • Provide Materials & Processes engineering expertise for metallic materials used across spacecraft structures and systems.
  • Support material selection and qualification for various metals and aerospace materials.
  • Develop, review, and maintain material and process specifications and engineering standards.
  • Provide technical guidance for manufacturing processes including machining, forging, and welding.
  • Evaluate material properties and manufacturing processes against various requirements.
  • Develop and execute material and process qualification test plans.
  • Perform and support failure analysis and root cause investigations.
  • Work closely with Supplier Quality Engineering and Supply Chain to evaluate supplier capabilities.
  • Serve as highest technical authority on selected processes and alloy classes.
  • Mentor junior M&P engineers and represent the M&P organization in program-level reviews.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • 0 years of experience for Level I M&P Engineer, 2+ years for Level II, and 5+ years for Senior M&P Engineer.
  • Master’s degree or PhD in a related field preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience supporting metallic materials and processes for high-reliability hardware preferred.
  • Deep expertise in welding, heat treatment, fatigue, and fracture mechanics preferred.
  • Fundamental understanding of metallic materials including aluminum and titanium.
  • Experience with metallic manufacturing processes such as casting and additive manufacturing.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work cross-functionally.
  • Demonstrated ability to solve complex technical problems.
  • Extensive hands-on experience with metallography and material characterization methods.
