Overview

The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston is seeking experienced mount makers to support their exhibition schedule by designing and fabricating mounts that meet professional museum standards, ensuring the stability and security of displayed objects. The role involves collaboration with conservators and curators, as well as maintaining a safe and organized workspace.

Responsibilities

• Communicates regularly with the supervisor to ensure workflow remains manageable and on track.
• Designs and produces mounts with protective and supportive properties using various materials.
• Handles artwork in accordance with established conservation and curatorial specifications.
• Generates mount documentation, along with installation and deinstallation instructions.
• Orders tools, supplies, and equipment as needed, subject to supervisor approval.
• Pursues relevant educational opportunities to maintain continuing education.
• Participates in workspace maintenance by cleaning and organizing the studio space.
• Assists in other special projects related to mount making as assigned.

Requirements

• A bachelor's degree in fine arts with a focus on jewelry making is preferred.
• Proven expertise in designing mounts for a diverse collection is essential.
• Strong background in metal fabrication techniques, including welding, is required.
• Proficient in using and maintaining power and hand tools.
• Extensive knowledge of mechanical fasteners and anchoring systems is required.
• Strong mathematical skills for accurate measurements and calculations.
• Ability to create templates and drawings that can be understood by colleagues.
• Prior experience with mold-making, casting, adhesives, acrylics, and epoxy resins is preferred.
• Proficiency in project management and budget forecasting is required.
• Ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively with others.
