Overview

The City of Chicago is seeking a Sheet Metal Worker for the Department of Aviation's Facilities Section. This position involves performing journey-level sheet metal work, including the fabrication, installation, and repair of sheet metal materials and parts.

Responsibilities

  • Read blueprints, specifications, and work orders to assess work required.
  • Fabricate, install, and repair heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning duct systems.
  • Ensure adequate supplies of tools, equipment, and materials are at work sites.
  • Make calculations and use measuring devices for layout work.
  • Cut, bend, and shape pieces using power and machine tools.
  • Inspect the accuracy and quality of fabricated parts and make necessary adjustments.
  • Fasten pieces of sheet metal using welds, bolts, cement, rivets, or other devices.
  • Install sheet metal parts and products, lifting and setting parts in place.
  • Drill holes and install brackets and metal hangers to secure sheet metal parts.
  • Operate specialized equipment including hacksaws, punch and drill presses, and welding equipment.
  • Fabricate sheet metal parts for vehicles in fleet service garages.
  • Prepare work activity reports.
  • Load, transport, and unload equipment and supplies as required.
  • Erect scaffolds to perform sheet metal work above ground level.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of a US Department of Labor registered sheet metal apprenticeship training program and journeyman status, OR
  • Successful completion of an industry or company sponsored apprenticeship training program in sheet metal work plus two years of journey-level work experience, OR
  • Six years of journey-level work experience as a Sheet Metal Worker.
  • A Driver’s License is required at the time of hire.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with fabrication and welding experience.
