Overview

The City of Chicago is seeking a Machinist for the Chicago Department of Transportation's Division of In-House Construction. This position involves performing journey-level machinist work, including the manufacturing, repair, and rebuilding of precision metal parts for mechanical equipment and machinery.

Responsibilities

  • Review blueprints, specifications, or models of parts to determine work procedures and tools needed.
  • Inspect and dismantle mechanical equipment to identify malfunctions and perform necessary repairs.
  • Fabricate metal parts by setting up and operating machine tools.
  • Plan and lay out jobs, making calculations to establish dimensions and settings.
  • Perform precision handwork to finish and assemble machined parts.
  • Use precision measuring instruments to maintain accuracy during operations.
  • Monitor machine feed and speed during machining operations.
  • Check finished metal products to ensure they meet specifications.
  • Install and test new and repaired parts for proper fit and operation.
  • Prepare work activity reports.
  • Load, transport, and unload equipment and supplies.
  • Clean work sites after repairs.
  • Clean, repair, and lubricate machinery and tools.
  • Weld or braze broken parts as required.
  • Cut steel with acetylene torch as needed.
  • Disassemble machines using tools to examine parts for defects.

Requirements

  • Six years of journey-level work experience as a Machinist, OR
  • Successful completion of a US Department of Labor registered Machinist apprenticeship training program and journeyman status, OR
  • Successful completion of an industry or company sponsored apprenticeship training program as a Machinist, plus two years of journey-level experience.
