Job Description

Overview

The Welder/Fabricator role is essential for the production of heavy structural steel, focusing on flux-core welding and fabrication. Attention to detail and accuracy are critical, and experience with complex welding procedures is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Work approximately 45 to 55 hours per week.
  • Position, align, fit, and weld parts to form complete units or subunits according to blueprints.
  • Verify conformance of work pieces to specifications using measuring tools.
  • Tack-weld fitted parts together.
  • Examine metal stock or work pieces to ensure specifications are met.
  • Align and fit parts using various tools.
  • Mark work piece bending and cutting lines.
  • Position or tighten braces and clamps for welding.
  • Study engineering drawings to determine materials and task sequences.
  • Move parts into position using hoists or cranes.
  • Set up and operate fabricating machines to form and assemble metal components.
  • Hammer, chip, and grind work pieces to cut, bend, and straighten metal.
  • Smooth work piece edges and fix taps, tubes, and valves.
  • Design and construct templates and fixtures.
  • Straighten warped or bent parts using hand tools.
  • Mark reference points onto floors or face blocks.
  • Set up face blocks, jigs, and fixtures.
  • Remove high spots and cut bevels using hand tools.

Requirements

  • A background in welding.
  • Must pass a welding test.
  • Experience with complex welding procedures and reading complex prints is preferred.

What you'll be running

This posting calls for TIG and Flux-Core work. TIG (GTAW) uses a non-consumable tungsten electrode with filler added by hand, giving the operator the most control of any process. Flux-cored (FCAW) runs a hollow wire filled with flux, combining MIG-like deposition rates with the outdoor tolerance of stick. It is the workhorse on heavy structural steel and shipbuilding, where thick sections and long welds reward speed.
