Overview

The Art Institute of Chicago is seeking a Carpenter to construct, install, repair, and renovate structures and fixtures made of wood and other materials throughout the museum. The Carpenter will work within the Department of Facilities and Logistics, which is responsible for the maintenance of museum facilities and non-art related operations.

Responsibilities

  • Installs walls, floors, and ceilings using various materials.
  • Fits, constructs, and installs doors, door frames, and trim using appropriate tools.
  • Builds and repairs custom casework, cabinets, and wooden fixtures.
  • Reads and interprets construction drawings and determines required materials.
  • Measures, shapes, and cuts materials to specified dimensions.
  • Assembles and fastens materials to create frameworks and fixtures.
  • Inspects structures to identify damaged or defective areas.
  • Removes damaged parts and completes routine repairs.
  • Erects and uses scaffolding and ladders for above-ground work.
  • Moves tools and materials around the jobsite and maintains order.
  • Follows safety rules and regulations and maintains a clean work environment.
  • Participates in required safety training.
  • Removes worksite debris and performs related duties.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum 2 years of hands-on carpentry experience required.
  • General knowledge of carpentry methods, materials, tools, and equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and measurements.
  • Skill in measuring, cutting, shaping, joining, and repairing materials.
  • Ability to safely operate woodworking machines and tools.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to organize work and complete tasks with limited supervision.
  • Ability to follow safety requirements and maintain a clean worksite.
  • Ability to work effectively in a diverse and inclusive environment.
