Overview

The Pipeline Welder position involves coordinating and completing welding, construction, and maintenance tasks as part of a roving pipeline crew. The role requires performing various types of welds on steel pipelines and operating heavy excavation equipment, while ensuring safety and compliance with company values.

Responsibilities

  • Perform pipe fabrication welds, in-service welds, tie-in welds, and hot taps on steel pipelines.
  • Operate and maintain heavy excavation equipment on in-service natural gas pipelines.
  • Read and interpret engineering construction blueprints.
  • Scope, plan, estimate, track costs, and schedule work for projects.
  • Operate trucks, welding rigs, and trailers for hauling equipment.
  • Assist Pipeline Specialists in field checks prior to excavation.
  • Locate and mark pipelines using pipeline locating equipment.
  • Inspect and prepare surfaces for coating application.
  • Calibrate and maintain holiday detectors for coating inspection.
  • Perform ultrasonic thickness examinations.
  • Conduct pipeline hot tap installations on in-service pipelines.
  • Review and perform pressure tests of pipelines.
  • Disassemble and clean meter tubes.
  • Repair pig launchers and receivers, and install pig signals.
  • Repair shorted pipeline casings and install CP test points.
  • Evacuate, purge, and load pipelines.
  • Install full encirclement sleeves for anomaly repairs.
  • Install mainline valve settings, valves, and fittings.
  • Modify existing and install new measurement facilities.
  • Promote and embody Kinder Morgan core values.
  • Identify, report, and correct safety and environmental concerns.
  • Assist with excavation spotter tasks and manage excavation of foreign pipeline crossings.
  • Launch, monitor, and receive pipeline pigs.
  • Conduct internal pipeline cleaning operations.
  • Remove existing pipelines and install replacements.
  • Provide direction to sub-contract workers.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Associate’s degree in job-related technical training preferred.
  • Intermediate or above welding skill level required.
  • At least 2 years of relatable experience required.
  • Ability to read blueprints and construction documentation.
  • Proficient in using various power and hand tools.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Competency in math required.
  • Must effectively interact with others and work in a team environment.
  • Must be resourceful, well organized, highly dependable, efficient, and detail oriented.
  • Flexibility and ability to quickly adapt to change is required.
  • Must maintain a driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record.
  • Must obtain and maintain DOT operational qualifications for working on natural gas pipelines.
  • Must pass qualifying weld tests within specified timeframes.

Additional Information

  • Work typically involves outdoor pipeline construction in adverse weather conditions.
  • Typical work schedule is Monday through Thursday, 10 hours per day, with potential for overtime.
  • Overnight travel is required upwards of 70% or more.
  • Position may require work outside of normal hours and responding to emergency callouts.
  • Must live or relocate within 60 miles of reporting location.
  • Position is Safety-Sensitive, requiring drug testing and motor vehicle record checks.
  • Manual dexterity is required, including lifting up to 50 lbs and exerting up to 100 lbs of force.
