Overview

The Boiler & Combustion Controls Field Service Technician role involves working in both a shop and customer sites to build and commission boiler control systems. The technician will diagnose and tune combustion systems to ensure equipment is production-ready, contributing to Cleaver-Brooks' reputation for integrated boiler solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Wire, integrate, and test controls and motors on watertube and firetube boilers and related auxiliaries.
  • Rebuild/size control valves and regulators; determine correct valve trim, regulator springs, oil gun length/diameter, and required accessories.
  • Assemble and function-test control panels from engineering wiring diagrams and layouts.
  • Build and verify operation of fuel skids, condensate tanks, and deaerators.
  • Trim-out both firetube and watertube boilers and perform rental boiler start-ups on customer sites.
  • Read and interpret blueprints and wiring schematics to complete work accurately.
  • Commission and tune combustion on boilers with pneumatic and electrical controls, including systems with superheaters, desuperheaters, and economizers.
  • Troubleshoot boilers and auxiliary equipment; retrofit control systems in the field; diagnose systems even without complete schematics.
  • Train colleagues on boiler operations and controls; maintain tool condition and inventory.
  • Collaborate across departments, uphold company policies, and support internal/external projects, delivering results efficiently and cost-effectively.
  • Perform other related duties as needed.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; technical degree preferred.
  • 3+ years of hands-on boiler experience, including PLCs, transformers, transmitters, and related controls.
  • Valid, unrestricted driver’s license with a safe driving record.
  • Ability to read blueprints/schematics and follow written and verbal directions.
  • Strong mechanical and electrical aptitude with broad knowledge of boiler controls.
  • Proven field troubleshooting and retrofit capability, even without complete documentation.

  • Role requires stooping, climbing, bending, crawling, lifting up to 50 lbs., working in confined/elevated spaces, and extended periods of standing.
