Overview

The Car Repairman Trainee position at the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) involves building, rebuilding, troubleshooting, repairing, testing, replacing, and inspecting locomotives and passenger railroad cars in compliance with federal and LIRR/MTA regulations. LIRR is the largest and oldest continuously operating commuter railroad in the U.S., serving millions of riders across a vast system.

Responsibilities

• Inspect, repair, maintain and install various components and subsystems of rolling stock equipment.
• Perform daily and periodic tests of air-brake systems as required by the Code of Federal Regulations.
• Conduct daily and periodic mechanical inspections as required by the CFR.
• Perform scheduled and on-demand maintenance tasks on passenger railroad car equipment.
• Weld, paint, and stencil numbers/letters on railroad passenger cars.
• Utilize a variety of hand tools, power tools, specialty tools, and measuring instruments.
• Work at various locations throughout the LIRR system.

Requirements

• A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent (GED or TASC).
• A minimum of four years of documented mechanical experience or a combination of training and experience.
• Two or more years of railroad or transit railcar maintenance experience.
• A Bachelor’s Degree or higher with two years of mechanical experience and/or training.
• Current LIRR employee with four years of work history and two years of mechanical experience and/or training.
• Working understanding of mechanical principles and ability to troubleshoot systems.
• Ability to read and interpret drawings, diagrams, blueprints, and schematics.
• Familiarity with basic personal computer operations within a Windows environment.
• Ability to lift 70 pounds from track level onto a rail car.

Additional Information

• Candidates must pass a written exam, a panel interview, and a practical exam.
• Successful completion of the Car Repairman training program is a condition of employment.
• Candidates may be placed in a competitive or non-competitive class position based on qualifications.
• Current employees must have a satisfactory work history and attendance record.
