Overview

The Welding Lab Assistant supports the daily operation of the welding laboratory under the supervision of the Welding Instructor. This role involves assisting with laboratory preparation, equipment management, safety procedures, and maintaining a clean and organized instructional environment.

Responsibilities

• Maintain the welding laboratory in a safe, clean, orderly, and functional condition.
• Assist with maintaining a safe laboratory environment and reinforce established welding safety practices.
• Explain and reinforce appropriate safety precautions prior to laboratory or shop activities.
• Assist with housekeeping, cleaning, and routine maintenance activities within the laboratory.
• Prepare welding booths, equipment, tools, materials, supplies, and other resources for assigned laboratory activities.
• Issue and collect tools, equipment, materials, and supplies as appropriate.
• Assist students with the proper use, handling, and care of laboratory materials and equipment.
• Organize laboratory equipment, tools, and supplies for efficient access and use.
• Maintain appropriate and secure storage of welding materials, supplies, tools, and equipment.
• Maintain inventory records and monitor the condition and availability of equipment, tools, materials, and supplies.
• Identify equipment, tool, facility, or safety concerns and report them promptly.
• Keep assigned laboratory areas, welding booths, classrooms, and work areas neat and orderly.
• Assist with preparing the laboratory for classes, demonstrations, testing, and other instructional activities.
• Provide technical laboratory assistance to students in welding and related technical disciplines.
• Demonstrate knowledge of welding practices, equipment, tools, materials, and laboratory procedures.
• Assess student questions and needs and provide assistance at a level the student can understand.
• Reinforce proper welding techniques, equipment operation, safety procedures, and laboratory practices.
• Recognize when a student requires additional instruction or assistance and refer concerns to the Welding Instructor.
• Maintain confidentiality of student, employee, and College information.
• Support student learning and successful completion of laboratory activities.
• Monitor laboratory activities and communicate safety, equipment, attendance, or student concerns to the Welding Instructor.
• Assist with documenting student participation and laboratory activities as assigned.
• Report accidents, injuries, equipment malfunctions, unsafe conditions, and other concerns promptly.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED equivalent is required.
• Three years of full-time work experience as a welder is required.
• Diploma/Certificate in welding is preferred.
• Previous work experience as a teacher or teaching/lab assistant is preferred.
• Knowledge of basic welding principles, practices, tools, and equipment.
• Knowledge of welding laboratory safety practices and procedures.
• Ability to safely operate and demonstrate the use of common welding tools and equipment.
• Ability to identify basic equipment problems, safety hazards, and maintenance needs.
• Ability to read and follow technical instructions, safety procedures, and equipment manuals.
• Ability to work effectively with students in a hands-on laboratory environment.
• Ability to communicate effectively and maintain positive working relationships.
• Ability to maintain accurate inventory and laboratory records.
• Ability to follow instructions and work effectively under the direction of the Welding Instructor.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.
• Ability to maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
• Ability to work effectively as part of an instructional team.

• Position based initially at Wallace in Dothan, Alabama.
• Anticipated start date is September 1, 2026.
