Overview

The Machinist (Mechanic) position at the Long Island Rail Road involves maintaining all rolling stock units and associated machinery to ensure a safe and reliable fleet for customers. The LIRR, established in 1834, is the largest and busiest commuter railroad in the U.S., serving millions of riders annually.

Responsibilities

• Maintain all LIRR rolling stock units and associated machinery.
• Troubleshoot, maintain, repair, and install mechanical components and sub-components of various heavy equipment.
• Clean tools, equipment, and parts using wire brushes, torches, and cleaning solvents.
• Inspect equipment for structural damage, integrity, and wear according to regulations.
• Grind, bore, cut, bend, size, shape, slot, mill, plane, sand, fabricate, and file various machine and engine parts.
• Operate grinders, borers, drills, sanders, lathes, and milling machinery.
• Read and interpret schematics, blueprints, shop drawings, and technical manuals.
• Inspect engine fluids for viscosity and presence.
• Demonstrate proficiency in basic machine shop mathematics and operation of shop machinery.

Requirements

• Four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent (GED or TASC).
• Completed Machinist apprenticeship or four years of related experience as a journeyman.
• Mechanical ability and proficiency with electrical meters and testing devices.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, shop drawings, and schematics.
• Understanding of mechanical principles, specifically diesel mechanics.
• Knowledge of machine maintenance and lubrication procedures.
• Ability to repair and install various equipment components.
• Knowledge of hand and power tool operation and maintenance.
• Valid driver's license.
