Overview

A Schuff Steel Production Fitter-Welder utilizes expertise in steel and bridge fabrication to assemble and fit various structural materials, playing a critical role in high-profile projects across commercial, bridge, and industrial sectors. The position requires proficiency in welding and knowledge of blueprints and heat reactions of structural metals.

Responsibilities

• Follows applicable welding procedures (AWS, AISC).
• Welds on the ground level, above ground and below ground, in any required position.
• Chips, peens, and grinds material to prepare for welding or finish.
• Welds structural materials such as plates, sheets, girders, and tanks under close tolerances.
• Straightens materials by heat or flame.
• Performs gouging and scarfing as needed.
• Takes and passes welding test in accordance with AWS D1.1.
• Receives instructions, prints, sketches, and work orders.
• Reads and interprets blueprints and plans the fitting operation.
• Directs and assists in handling and spreading of material according to detail drawings.
• Lays out work lines or fits up jigs for positioning material when required.
• Checks, squares, and scribes all detail connections.
• Ensures work conforms to drawings and notes.
• Cleans up material by grinding or chipping.
• Burns and tack welds for assembly purposes.
• Moves material to and from the work area and welding equipment as necessary.
• Maintains a clean and organized work area.
• Performs other routine duties per management direction.
• Adheres to and follows all safety rules and PPE requirements.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• 12 months of stable work experience.
• Must pass required weld test and fitter test.
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules and blueprints.
• Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide into all units of measure.
• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions.
• Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
• Cert in AWS D1.1 weld test.
