Overview

The General Technician Apprentice Below Ground position is an entry-level role focused on installing, maintaining, and repairing gas mains and service lines. The position is part of Southern Company Gas, a subsidiary of Atlanta-based Southern Company, which serves millions of natural gas utility customers.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with installation, repair, and maintenance of the distribution system.
  • Operate basic equipment and tools.
  • Manage traffic control.
  • Perform landscaping and general maintenance.
  • Dig, shore, repair leaks, test, and wrap pipes.
  • Use pressure recording devices.
  • Ensure truck is stocked with equipment and supplies.
  • Complete customer and compliance orders efficiently.
  • Observe safety requirements and regulatory guidelines.
  • Capture documentation in the Mobile Data Terminal.
  • Assist in connecting and disconnecting gas service.
  • Conduct investigations of high bill complaints.
  • Perform regular meter inspections and maintenance.
  • Respond to customer inquiries.
  • Operate Automated Dispatch system for meter reads.
  • Identify abnormal operating conditions and take action.
  • Perform sniff tests to detect gas leaks.
  • Complete other job-related duties as required.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Mechanical aptitude.
  • Basic knowledge and use of hand tools and equipment.
  • Ability to pass basic skills and knowledge assessments.
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Field operations experience preferred.
  • Experience with heavy equipment operations preferred.
  • Technical school training and certification preferred.
  • Welding experience or certification preferred.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to use good judgment in hazardous environments.
  • Basic proficiency in MS Office and computer skills.
  • Customer service skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to resolve difficult situations.
  • Knowledge of assigned geographical territory.
  • Ability to smell odorant used to detect gas leaks.

Additional Information

  • This is a bargaining unit position (IBEW Local 1997).
  • This position will have automatic progression per the collective bargaining agreement.
