Overview

The Senior Carpenter at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center plays a crucial role in supporting cancer care, research, education, and prevention by overseeing the construction, renovation, repair, and maintenance of facilities. This position requires advanced carpentry skills and compliance with healthcare regulations while providing mentorship to junior team members.

Responsibilities

  • Perform skilled carpentry work involving the installation, repair, modification, and maintenance of doors, frames, and hardware.
  • Install, repair, modify, and maintain millwork and cabinetry.
  • Work on walls, partitions, ceilings, and flooring systems.
  • Handle furniture and casework installation, repair, and maintenance.
  • Maintain patient room fixtures and accessories.
  • Support research laboratory furnishings and structures.
  • Construct and alter wood, metal stud, and drywall assemblies.
  • Build and install cabinets, countertops, shelving, and custom products.
  • Machine, assemble, and install architectural millwork from shop drawings.
  • Fabricate specialty items based on operational requirements.
  • Minimize disruption while performing work in clinical and public spaces.
  • Maintain compliance with Infection Control Risk Assessment requirements.
  • Coordinate work with clinical departments and contractors.
  • Repair and replace damaged building components.
  • Conduct inspections and preventive maintenance on building components.
  • Respond to work orders and emergency service requests.
  • Read and interpret blueprints and construction documents.
  • Estimate labor, materials, and equipment requirements.
  • Assist with facility renovation project planning and execution.
  • Provide technical guidance and training to junior carpenters.
  • Monitor workmanship and ensure compliance with standards.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent required.
  • Completion of trade school or vocational school preferred.
  • 5 years Journeyman level carpentry experience required.
  • Advanced carpentry and millwork skills.
  • Experience interpreting shop drawings and construction documents.
  • Ability to support projects in occupied healthcare environments.
  • Valid Texas driver's license preferred.
