Overview

The Watershed Construction Maintenance Worker I performs semi-skilled construction and maintenance work for the wastewater collection and water distribution systems in the Department of Watershed Management. The role involves operating heavy equipment and working as part of a crew under direct supervision to ensure safety and efficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Complete assigned work orders efficiently and effectively.
  • Inspect and repair water mains and manage traffic control during water main breaks.
  • Maintain and repair fire hydrants throughout the distribution system.
  • Execute tasks using power and hand tools, as well as construction equipment.
  • Conduct pre-trip inspections on vehicles.
  • Assist Crew Supervisors with duties and attend safety classes regularly.
  • Coordinate with Crew Supervisors to determine daily duties and material availability.
  • Set up safety cones and ensure safety of work areas.
  • Clean up work areas after completing tasks.
  • Safeguard work areas and flag traffic during maintenance activities.
  • Locate water service connections and mark utility lines.
  • Check utility truck for proper equipment and tools.
  • Maintain a safe and organized work area.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED).
  • No prior experience required.
  • Preferred: 6 months of experience in construction or maintenance in water distribution or wastewater collection.
  • Knowledge of department policies and procedures.
  • Skill in operating a variety of light-to-heavy power equipment.
  • Ability to understand and apply relevant policies and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate diplomatically with crew members.
