Overview

The Advanced Photon Source (APS) at Argonne National Laboratory is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to join the Beamline Instrumentation Group within the X-ray Science Division. The role involves providing engineering support for synchrotron radiation beamlines and contributing to the design and construction of scientific instrumentation.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the development and execution of mechanical designs for beamlines and associated end stations.
  • Develop conceptual designs and perform detailed mechanical design and engineering analyses.
  • Collaborate closely with scientists, controls engineers, and other mechanical engineers on integrated opto-mechanical and mechatronic systems, and automation.
  • Develop, track, and help manage project cost and schedule; contribute to project planning and reporting.
  • Coordinate procurement and manufacturing processes, including vendor engagement, fabrication oversight, inspection, and assembly.
  • Conduct performance, acceptance, and verification testing of mechanical and mechatronic systems.
  • Maintain awareness of, and apply, state-of-the-art methods in precision mechanics, mechatronics, and automation, including AI/ML tools where appropriate.
  • May be required to perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Knowledge and experience in the design, fabrication, assembly, and commissioning of mechanical systems.
  • Proficiency in mechanical engineering design tools, including 2D and 3D CAD (preferably AutoCAD and Creo); finite element analysis (FEA) tools (e.g., ANSYS or COMSOL); and engineering analysis/simulation tools (e.g., MATLAB or Mathematica).
  • Knowledge and experience in thermal design, fluid flow, stress analysis, machine design, and precision machine design.
  • Knowledge of fabrication methods and associated QC/QA requirements, procedures, and techniques.
  • Skill and experience interacting with scientific staff and multidisciplinary research teams.
  • Experience with the design and implementation of flexure-based positioning assemblies.
  • Ability to model Argonne’s core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork.
  • Interpersonal skills, oral and written communication skills, and ability to interact with people at all levels both within and outside the laboratory.

Additional Information

  • This position can be hired at one of two levels; the selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate level (RD1 or RD2) dependent upon the depth and breadth of relevant knowledge and skills.
  • The expected hiring range for this position is $78,505.00 - $122,467.41.
