Responsibilities

  • Fabricate and weld high-pressure piping, pressure-containing components, and mechanical assemblies in accordance with applicable ASME codes.
  • Perform precision GTAW (TIG) welding on stainless steel, nickel-based alloys, and carbon steel.
  • Interpret engineering drawings, piping isometrics, and weld symbols to prepare, fit, and assemble components for welding.
  • Perform material preparation, joint beveling, cleaning, fit-up, and fixturing to ensure weld quality.
  • Monitor welding parameters, heat input, and interpass temperatures to maintain weld integrity.
  • Fabricate structural frames, equipment skids, mounting brackets, fixtures, and other hardware.
  • Support weld inspections and nondestructive examination, including visual inspection and liquid penetrant testing.
  • Maintain accurate welding records, material traceability, and fabrication documentation.
  • Work closely with engineering teams to identify fabrication challenges and recommend improvements.
  • Maintain welding equipment, tooling, and shop work areas.

Requirements

  • 4+ years of professional welding experience, including hands-on fabrication of ASME code-compliant components.
  • Current or recent welder performance qualifications (WPQ) in accordance with ASME Section IX.
  • Strong proficiency in GTAW (TIG) welding of stainless steel and high-alloy materials.
  • Experience fabricating pressure piping, pressure vessels, or other pressure-containing hardware.
  • Ability to interpret mechanical drawings, piping isometrics, welding symbols, and fabrication specifications.
  • Experience preparing and executing welds using qualified welding procedure specifications (WPS).

How this job compares in Hawthorne, CA

Pay in context

At roughly $48/hr, this posting sits about 30% above the $37/hr median for welding jobs in Hawthorne, CA — toward the top of a $31–$58/hr middle band drawn from 35 postings with published pay. Put another way, it pays more than about 66% of the comparable postings we have wage data for. Pay that far above local median usually comes attached to something: a harder cert requirement, travel, night shift, or overtime that isn't really optional. Worth establishing which before you accept.

The local market in Hawthorne, CA

We're tracking 35 other active welding openings in Hawthorne, CA right now, from 2 different employers. 9 of them were added in the last week. Across California as a whole we're tracking 553 other active welding openings from 251 employers. A metro this active generally means you have real leverage — employers here are competing for the same welders. Browse every welding job in Hawthorne, or widen the search to California.

The most active employers in California at the moment, by number of open welding reqs, are SpaceX (34), Honeywell Aerospace (21), and Aerotek (17). Volume like that usually means either a genuine expansion or a staffing agency working several client sites — worth knowing which before you apply.

Within California, the best-paying metros we track by median hourly rate are Redondo Beach at $72/hr, El Segundo at $58/hr, and Torrance at $47/hr. If you can relocate or commute, that spread is worth factoring in.

What you'll be running

This posting calls for TIG. TIG (GTAW) uses a non-consumable tungsten electrode with filler added by hand, giving the operator the most control of any process. It is slow, demanding, and the standard for stainless, aluminum, and anything where the bead has to look as good as it holds.

Certifications this posting mentions

  • ASME Section IX — the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code qualification. It covers welding on pressure-retaining equipment — boilers, vessels, and process piping — where a failed weld is a safety incident rather than a rework ticket.

Read straight from this posting's text. Confirm the exact qualification the employer wants before you test — requirements vary by shop even under the same code.
