Overview

General Matter is a company focused on enriching uranium to provide low-cost nuclear fuel for advanced technologies. The Mechanical Engineer role involves designing and testing mechanical structures for next-generation enrichment technology, collaborating with a diverse team of engineers.

Responsibilities

  • Develop mechanisms and mechanical structures for enrichment, owning them through the entire product lifecycle.
  • Select and specify materials and coatings for enrichment hardware based on performance requirements.
  • Support optimization of designs for cost, performance, and manufacturability.
  • Functionally test hardware through various methods including thermal and durability testing.
  • Perform root-cause analysis on test failures and develop hardware mitigations.
  • Collaborate with materials scientists and metallurgists to characterize material behavior under relevant conditions.
  • Participate in design reviews and provide feedback to ensure design objectives are met.
  • Work closely with other engineering disciplines to ensure effective integration of designs.

Requirements

  • Background or working knowledge in materials science or metallurgy, particularly in failure analysis and material selection.
  • Experience designing precision mechanical structures for optical or photonic-based systems.
  • Strong understanding of engineering fundamentals.
  • Ability to perform trade studies and make recommendations using first principles.
  • Experience in a fast-paced engineering environment or a highly technical role.
