Overview

The HVAC Technician is responsible for inspecting, troubleshooting, repairing, refurbishing, installing, and testing heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and related climate-control systems and components used in railcars. The ideal candidate has hands-on HVAC experience and strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting skills.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect, diagnose, repair, refurbish, install, and test HVAC systems and components used in railcars.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, airflow, control, and refrigeration-system problems.
  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on HVAC equipment.
  • Diagnose issues involving compressors, condensers, evaporators, blowers, motors, fans, thermostats, controls, valves, sensors, heaters, and related components.
  • Perform refrigerant recovery, evacuation, charging, leak testing, and system commissioning when qualified and required.
  • Use gauges, meters, electrical test equipment, thermometers, and other diagnostic tools to identify system problems.
  • Read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, mechanical drawings, HVAC diagrams, and technical manuals.
  • Install, remove, replace, repair, and reconnect HVAC components and associated electrical wiring.
  • Perform brazing or soldering of refrigerant lines and tubing when qualified and required.
  • Verify refrigerant flow, pressures, temperatures, airflow, electrical connections, controls, and overall system operation.
  • Perform system testing and document test results.
  • Identify defective or worn components and recommend appropriate repair or replacement.
  • Disassemble and reassemble HVAC equipment during railcar refurbishment.
  • Ensure components are properly secured, connected, insulated, and protected against vibration and movement.
  • Follow approved work instructions, engineering specifications, and customer requirements.
  • Maintain accurate production, repair, inspection, refrigerant, and testing records.
  • Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in a clean and safe condition.
  • Properly handle refrigerants, compressed gases, chemicals, and other hazardous materials.
  • Coordinate with Production, Engineering, Quality, Electrical, Mechanical, and other teams to resolve technical issues.
  • Assist with identifying recurring HVAC failures and recommend process or design improvements.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Two or more years of hands-on HVAC experience in residential, commercial, industrial, transportation, or manufacturing environments.
  • Working knowledge of refrigeration and HVAC principles.
  • Ability to troubleshoot electrical and mechanical HVAC systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and mechanical drawings.
  • Experience using electrical and HVAC diagnostic equipment.
  • Ability to use hand tools, power tools, gauges, meters, and other HVAC service equipment.
  • Ability to safely handle refrigerants and related materials when assigned to refrigerant work.
  • Ability to work independently and follow technical instructions and procedures.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality and safety.
