Job Description

Overview

As a CNC Metals Fabricator & Welder, you will shape metal by interpreting fabrication drawings, setting up machines, making precise cuts, and ensuring quality welds. You will oversee the entire process from specifications to final inspection, ensuring that every part meets the required standards.

Responsibilities

  • Translate technical drawings and specifications into actionable setups and sequences.
  • Operate saws, grinders, press brakes, shears, and CNC equipment to cut and form components.
  • Fit, assemble, and weld (MIG, TIG, stick) to create accurate, durable assemblies.
  • Verify dimensions and quality at each stage; adjust to maintain tight tolerances.
  • Troubleshoot fit-up or process issues to keep projects on schedule.
  • Maintain and clean tools and equipment; escalate repair needs to supervision.
  • Commit to safety: wear PPE, follow OSHA and company procedures, and keep a tidy, hazard-free area.
  • Partner with engineers, designers, and teammates; share status updates and suggest process improvements.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; trade school or vocational training in fabrication/welding preferred.
  • Experience in metal fabrication, welding, or a related discipline.
  • Strong print-reading skills and the ability to interpret technical documentation.
  • Proficiency in MIG, TIG, and stick welding.
  • Experience with fabrication machinery and common shop tools.
  • Detail orientation, problem-solving ability, and confidence working independently.
  • Welding certification (e.g., AWS, ASME) preferred.
  • Forklift certification is a plus.

Additional Information

  • Lift and move materials up to 40 lbs.
  • Work for extended periods while standing, bending, and in varied positions.
  • Comfortable working in loud, dusty, or hot shop environments.

Pay in context

At roughly $27/hr, this posting sits about 13% above the $24/hr median for welding jobs across Tennessee — toward the top of a $21–$27/hr middle band drawn from 33 postings with published pay. Put another way, it pays more than about 70% of the comparable postings we have wage data for. Pay that far above local median usually comes attached to something: a harder cert requirement, travel, night shift, or overtime that isn't really optional. Worth establishing which before you accept.

The most active employers in Tennessee at the moment, by number of open welding reqs, are Staffmark (4), Welding Shop in Nashville, TN (3), and JOST International (3). Volume like that usually means either a genuine expansion or a staffing agency working several client sites — worth knowing which before you apply.

What you'll be running

This posting calls for MIG, TIG, and Stick work. MIG (GMAW) feeds a continuous wire electrode through a shielding-gas nozzle. It lays down metal fast and is forgiving on clean material, which is why it dominates production and light fabrication work. TIG (GTAW) uses a non-consumable tungsten electrode with filler added by hand, giving the operator the most control of any process. It is slow, demanding, and the standard for stainless, aluminum, and anything where the bead has to look as good as it holds.

Certifications this posting mentions

  • ASME Section IX — the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code qualification. It covers welding on pressure-retaining equipment — boilers, vessels, and process piping — where a failed weld is a safety incident rather than a rework ticket.

Read straight from this posting's text. Confirm the exact qualification the employer wants before you test — requirements vary by shop even under the same code.
