Overview

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is seeking a QMED Oiler to assist engineers in the operation, maintenance, and repair of equipment on the R/V Atlantis. The role involves performing general engine room duties and standing watches.

Responsibilities

  • Perform general duties including wiping oil, maintaining tools, and cleaning machinery.
  • Lubricate moving parts of propulsion engines and auxiliary equipment.
  • Pump bilges and clean strainers, filters, and centrifuges.
  • Check the proper operation of machinery during scheduled rounds and maintain proper temperatures and pressures.
  • Record data in the engineering log.
  • Assist engineers with maintenance and repair of engine room equipment while in port.
  • Load freshwater, stores, and bunkers, and connect to shore side power and water.
  • Maintain and inventory spare parts.
  • Keep a log of all watch operations and conditions.
  • Stand engine room watch and generator watch in port as needed.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent education and one year sea duty as an Oiler.
  • Prefer Oiler experience on a similar vessel.
  • U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner's Credential endorsed as a QMED Oiler.
  • Familiarity with a variety of engine room equipment and tools.
  • Ability to discern and help repair equipment malfunctions.
  • Basic mathematical calculation skills.
  • Demonstrate good safety practices and procedures.
  • All applicable training as required by the Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers.
  • Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC) and an unexpired Passport.
  • Ability to pass a Pre-employment DOT drug screen.
  • Unexpired (STCW Expiration date) USCG medical Certificate.

Additional Information

  • Hourly rate is $31.83, with annual compensation based on hours worked.
  • Eligible employees may receive a comprehensive benefits package.
  • Working at least 8 hours per day, and at times in excess of 12 hours per day, 7 days per week.
  • Work at sea for three to five months continuously.
  • Live and work in cramped quarters, frequently in bad weather and with violent ship motion.
  • Must pass examinations for visual acuity, color sense, and hearing.
  • Physical labor required, including climbing and handling moderate weights over 50 pounds.
